These crispy, soft, Nourishing Traditions style fried bananas are the perfect treat with some cream! They only take a few nourishing ingredients and are super quick to whip up!
What is Nourishing Traditions?
Nourishing Traditions is a cook book written by Sally Fallon Morell in 1995. This cookbook is based on the research of Dr. Weston A. Price, a dentist who traveled around the world in search of the proper human diet.
In his research Dr. Price found that processed, sugary, refined foods where causing terrible health problems in people, and that the people who had not been exposed to these modern foods had wonderful health. The traditional cultures eating lots of fat, free-range animals products, sprouted or fermented grains, cultured dairy, fermented veggies, and other traditional foods were almost completely free from disease and dental decay. I have a whole post explaining about Nourishing Traditions here!

What makes these Nourishing Traditions-style Fried Bananas healthy?
These Nourishing Traditions-style Fried Bananas use super healthy and simple ingredients! Each ingredient used is full of nutrients and you will feel great eating and serving these to friends! Here is what you will need to make these Nourishing Traditions-style Fried Bananas
Lard
This what you will use to fry the bananas in. Lard, or the fat of a pig, is full of vitamin D and is 40% saturated. Saturated fat is super healthy for you. You can learn more about fats an oils is my post here. This animal fat is perfect for frying because it is super stable at high heats. Lard also contains vitamin K2, and choline which helps metabolism. It is definitely a fat you can feel great about eating! Be sure to buy lard from healthy free range or pastured pigs. My favorite brand is Fatworks which you can get here.
If you can’t find good lard, use olive oil, butter, tallow, or another stable fat for the oil.
Bananas
Bananas are natures sweet treat! Isn’t it amazing how delicious real food tastes when your taste buds aren’t desensitized by all the processed sugar! Bananas are the perfect treat! As you probably know, bananas contain lots of potassium, vitamin C, B6, as well as manganese and copper. This sweet treat has nutrients too! If you want, try using plantains in place of bananas.
Honey
Raw local honey contains lots of health benefits! Since the honey will be cooked for part of this recipe, it doesn’t need to be raw, but if you add some more honey at the end, I recommend raw! Some raw honey contains up to 31 vitamins and minerals. If the honey is local, it can help with allergies in some people.
Cinnamon
This warming spice brings the whole dish together! If you don’t like cinnamon, try cocoa powder, pumpkin pie spice, or another seasoning. Cinnamon has antioxidants and and small amounts of vitamin E, potassium, vitamin B6, magnesium, and nicacin.
Raw cream or Greek Yoghurt
Raw cream is the perfect creamy base for these fried bananas! Cream from grass-fed cows has numerous health benefits! I could write a whole post about raw milk and all its amazing nutrients and healing properties. If you can’t find raw cream or milk, use Greek yoghurt or another cultured cream. Pasteurized milk without living bacteria is very hard to digest. This is why I only recommend cultured dairy or raw dairy. If you do find raw milk from a local farmer, be sure the farmer knows what they are doing!
You can make raw whipped cream at home by skimming the cream off of the raw milk and whipping in a mixer.

What equipment will I need to make Nourishing Traditions-style Fried Bananas?
Now that you know the ingredients, let’s go over what kitchen tools you’ll need to make this yummy treat.
A skillet or frying pan
I use a cast iron skillet, but you can use any frying pan!
A small oven safe dish
A small Pyrex glass dish or another oven safe dish will work. If you are making a lot, a casserole could also work.
Oven mitts
You’ll definitely need oven mitts or a thick towel to grab the glass dish out of the oven.
An oven and stove
This one is obvious, but you will need an oven and a stovetop burner to make these Nourishing Traditions-style Fried bananas.
How to make Nourishing Traditions-style Fried Bananas
Start by getting all the ingredients out and take inventory of what you have. Then, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Now we can begin!
1. Chop the bananas length wise
Using a knife, slice the bananas length wise to create long strips of banana. Set them on a plate close to your frying pan for easy reach.
2. Heat up your skillet
Preheat your skillet to medium high heat if you are using a cast iron skillet. If you have a normal pan, add in the lard first and then heat up your pan.
3. Add your lard
Add enough lard to cover the bottom of the pan when melted. You can also use tallow, butter, or olive oil. If you are using olive oil or butter, turn the heat down a bit. Be careful of this step. Watch out for splattering oil! The pan will be very hot so you may want to wear your oven mitts for this next part.
4. Place the bananas into the pan
Place as many bananas as you can comfortably flip into the hot pan. They might pop and sizzle a bit so be careful. Let the bananas cook on one side for about a minute or until they are browning. Then, flip the bananas so the other side can cook. After both side are cooked, use a spatula to transfer the bananas into the baking dish.
5. Add toppings
Next, drizzle honey all over the bananas in the baking dish, and sprinkle some cinnamon over them. You can do as much or as little as you like.
6. Bake the fried bananas
Place the baking tray with bananas into the preheated oven for about 15 minutes. They will be bubbly and browning. After 15 minutes, use your oven mitts to remove the dish and place on a cooling rack or somewhere safe to cool.
7. Prepare your cream or yoghurt
Now you are ready to eat them! Add your home made whipped cream or Greek Yoghurt to a bowl, and place some freshly cooked bananas on top. Drizzle some more honey and sprinkle a little more cinnamon if you like. These Nourishing Traditions-style Fried Bananas are really good to make for a crowd too!
