What is Nourishing Traditions?
Nourishing Traditions is a cookbook written by Sally Fallon in 1995. This cookbook prioritizes traditional ways of eating and warns of the dangers of modern foods. The idea that modern foods are causing much of the chronic disease and illness in today’s age is not a new one. Nourishing Traditions is based on the research done by Dr. Weston A. Price. Price traveled to numerous regions of the world searching for the best diet for humans. From Africa, to Europe, to North America and in between, what he discovered was incredible. The cultures who ate lots of meat, animal fats, dairy, and unprocessed real food had virtually no disease and amazing health. On the other hand, people from the same region eating modern processed foods suffered from numerous health issues and development issues.

This Nourishing Traditions almond pie crust uses all real, nourishing ingredients. Soaked almonds, arrowroot powder, butter, coconut sugar, sea salt, and vanilla! Only six simple ingredients. Now that you know the ingredients, lets go over what is good about each one.
Ingredients for Nourishing Traditions Almond Pie Crust
This recipe for Nourishing Traditions Almond Pie crust only takes a few healthy ingredients. You probably already have most of them!
Soaked and Dehydrated Almonds
This requires a little bit of preparation before starting the recipe. However, this is an important step. Almonds contain lots of healthy vitamins and nutrients, but they also contain anti-nutrients. This anti nutrient, phytic acid, can only be removed by soaking the almonds. This way you can absorb all the nutrients and digest the almonds a lot better.
To soak almonds, add your almonds, and a pinch of salt, and water to a bowl. The water should cover the almonds. Let the almonds sit in the water for at least 7 hours or overnight. After the almonds have soaked, dehydrate them for 12-24 hours at 150 Fahrenheit in the oven.

Arrowroot Powder
Arrowroot powder is made from the dried and powdered root of the Maranta Arundinacea. It is a great alternative to corn starch because it is not refined. It is great in baking and is used to thicken pie fillings and such in the Nourishing Traditions cookbook. You can get some here.
Butter
I love butter! Butter is one of the most easily accessible healthiest foods today. It prevents chronic illness, boost metabolism, helps with nutrient absorption, and contains numerous vitamins and minerals. Read more about butter here. Butter gives this Nourishing Traditions Almond Pie Crust a delicious taste and texture. You’ll also need some extra butter to grease the pan. Try to find grass fed butter if possible. Kerrygold, vital farms, maple hill, and Kirkland are all good brands. Also, be prepared because the butter in this recipe need to be softened before you start the recipe.
Coconut Sugar
Coconut sugar is a wonderful alternative to refined cane sugar or other types of sugar. Unliked refined sugars, it still contains the nutrients of the coconut sap. Sea Salt
Sea salt contains so many minerals and health benefits. Salt is essential to the human body for digestion and overall health. Finding unrefined real salt is super important. What tools will I need to make Nourishing Traditions Almond Pie Crust?
You won’t need anything too special to make this easy Nourishing Traditions pie crust. You most likely already have a lot of it. Here’s what you’ll need:
A food processor
This handy kitchen tool is so helpful in the kitchen. It is a great thing to invest in if you to bake a lot. In this recipe, a food processor is used to turn the soaked almonds into flour. You’ll also use it to mix the dough. You an get a good one here.
A dehydrator or oven
You can use any oven to bake the pie crust. However, it might be a good idea to get a dehydrator for dehydrating the almonds if you want to use your oven during the 12 hours that the almonds need to dehydrate. You can get one here.
Baking Pans
You’ll need these to dehydrate the almonds if you plan to use your oven. Any size will work. You can get some here.
A Pie dish
9″ by 13″ is a good size. I prefer glass, but any will work. You’ll need this for baking the pie crust in the oven. You can get a good one here.
Oven mitts
This one is probably obvious but I’ll mention it anyway. You’ll need something to carefully pull the hot pie pan out of the oven with. If you don’t have oven mitts you can use a thick towel. You can get some good oven mitts here.
How to make Nourishing Traditions Almond Pie Crust
Now that you know all the ingredients and tools, let’s get to the good part.
1. Prepare to make your Almond Pie Crust
What I mean is get everything where you need it to be. Grease your pie pan with butte, preheat the oven to 325 Fahrenheit, and measure out all your ingredients.
2. Process the dehydrated almonds
Add 1 cup of soaked, dehydrated almonds to your food processor. Then, process until almond flour is formed.
3. Add the remaining ingredients
Add the rest of your ingredients and process until a dough is formed.
4. Create the crust and bake your Nourishing Traditions Almond Pie Crust
Press the dough into your buttered pie pan. Make sure the dough is evenly spread out. Bake for 25-30 minutes.
5. Enjoy!
Let the pie crust cool before adding your filling, or follow your pie recipe.
