If you have any blackberries on hand and want to make something delicious with them, look no further. This is the easiest most delicious recipe for Nourishing Traditions Blackberry Ice Cream out there. Not only is it unbelievably delicious, but it is super healthy and has no harmful ingredients. Only real, healthy, nourishing ingredients. You are going to love this frozen treat!
What is Nourishing Traditions
Nourishing Traditions is not only my favorite cookbook, but it is your complete guide to eating traditional, real food. It covers so many amazing topics from healthy fats and macros to preparation of grains and fermentation.
This cookbook did not come from nowhere however. It was written by Sally Fallon Morrel in 1995 but the knowledge shared in this book goes back centuries. All the information and recipes in this book follow the eating and cooking principles of traditional cultures. AKA the healthiest diet on the planet.
Nourishing Traditions is based on the research done by Dr. Weston A. Price in the 1920s. Dr. Price traveled around the world to numerous cultures in search of the perfect diet. All of the cultures he studies had one thing in common. Those who ate modern foods suffered from chronic illness, disease, bone deformity, and mental illness. Those who ate traditionally prepared food, lots of animal products, and minimally processed foods enjoyed wonderful health in mind and body, vitality, and strength!
I give you a whole post about this, in fact I did! Here’s where you can find that. I also highly recommend that you read Nourishing Traditions for yourself which you can get here. If you are a teen (like me!) who is new to all this healthy eating stuff, read my best tips here.
How is this Blackberry Ice Cream “Nourishing Traditions”?
This yummy Nourishing Traditions Blackberry Ice Cream follows the principles of the Nourishing Traditions diet! Here’s why:
No refined sugar
The only sweetener in this ice cream is a little bit of stevia in the ice cream itself and some honey in the optional blackberry drizzle. Most of the sweetness comes from the vitamin rich ripe blackberries!
Raw whole milk
Nourishing Traditions prioritizes raw whole dairy or cultured dairy. Raw milk and butter is the best form of dairy! Raw milk has so many health benefits and has been known to cure certain illnesses. Check out this website all about Raw Milk for more info. If you don’t have raw milk, you can use coconut milk or kefir for this recipe.
Organ Meats
This one is sort of optional but I’m going to mention it anyway. Traditional Cultures are organ meats! Liver and other organ meats are unbelievably nutrient dense and I recommend trying to eat a little liver each week. Read my post about how to eat liver here. If you want to get your liver in this week you can add a little grated frozen beef liver to this ice cream! You won’t even taste it! All you need is a couple teaspoons! It will make this ice cream so nutrient dense.
Is this Nourishing Traditions Blackberry Ice Cream healthy?
Yes! You could eat it every day if you wanted! It is so healthy for you with all the nutrient dense ingredients and since it doesn’t have any bad ingredients it can only do you good. I pretty much eat ice cream every day. My ice cream churner is my favorite kitchen tool. You can get mine here.
Since this Ice Cream is so healthy, it is perfect to serve to kids, friends, and family! Especially ones who think healthy food is gross. They can’t argue when they take a bite of this creamy treat! You can feel great about eating it yourself and serving it to others! Enjoy it!
What ingredients will I need to make Nourishing Traditions Blackberry Ice Cream?
This Nourishing Traditions Blackberry Ice Cream only takes a few simple ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need;
Raw Milk
Sadly, real raw milk is very scarce in today’s grocery stores. It is only legal to buy in a few American states! However, you can still get some of this nutrient dense amazingly healthy stuff another way. If you have a cow share you can get raw milk from local farms. A “cow share ” means you own part of the cow (and it’s milk) this is perfectly legal and is how most people get their raw milk. Check out thiswebsite learn more and to find a farmer near you.
If you can’t find raw milk, use cultured milk like kefir or cultured cream. Try to get grass-fed dairy! You can also use coconut milk in this recipe.
Eggs
Eggs are so nutrient dense! The yolks contain so many vitamins and are so good for your brain and organ health. They also give this ice cream a great texture and taste! If you want extra protein in this recipe, use whole hard boiled eggs in this recipe instead of just raw yolks.
Beef Gelatin Powder
This is such a superfood an amazing tool for thickening recipes. Not only is it great for texture, but it is great for your hair, skin, and nails because it contains collagen proteins! Here’s my favorite brand. I recommend grass-fed beef gelatin!
Blackberries
The most important ingredient in Nourishing Traditions Blackberry Ice Cream! The healthiest blackberries you can get would be sun ripened organic blackberries from your own backyard. The sun enhances vitamins in berries and local food is always fresher. However, if you can’t get them from your backyard, buy some in season organic ones from the store or find some from your local farmer’s market. Blackberries are so good for you when they are ripe and in season!
Lemon Juice
This ingredient brings out so much flavor in the blackberries and tastes so good! You can use 1/2 tsp of lemon extract in place of lemon juice if needed.
A Sweetener (optional)
I recommend adding a little natural sweetener to the ice cream itself. Whether that’s maple syrup, a few dates, raw honey, a teaspoon of stevia extract, coconut sugar, or another natural sweetener. However, the blackberries may be enough sweetness for you!
Honey
This is optional and only needed if you are making the blackberry swirl in the ice cream. It adds a great flavor and a beautiful look to this ice cream though! Honey is a great alternative to refined, processed sugar. Local honey has a lot of health benefits as well.
Liver (optional)
I highly recommend adding a teaspoon or two of grated frozen beef liver to this ice cream! Trust me you won’t even taste it! You won’t regret adding it in. Liver and organ meat in general is the most nutrient dense food on the planet. For more info about that read my post here.
What tools will I need to make Nourishing Traditions Blackberry Ice Cream?
This Ice Cream is super easy to make but you will need a few tools to get it done. Here’s what you’ll need:
A Blender
You’ll need a blender to mix all the ingredients together. Your blender doesn’t need to be super powerful since the ice cream doesn’t have anything to hard to blend in it. However, a good blender is something you should invest in. It is such a good tool to have on hand and can be used for soup, smoothies, pudding, ice cream, and so much more! You can get a really good one here. If you don’t own a blender you can use an immersion blender, mixer, or handheld mixer. If you use a mixer you’ll need to crush the blackberries into a liquid before mixing them in.
An Ice Cream Churner
Having an ice cream churner is so fun! They are so quick and easy to use and turn any smoothie into ice cream in about 20 minutes! I pour all my smoothies into my ice cream maker! I basically eat ice cream every day! You can get a good one here. If you don’t have one you can pour the ice cream mixture into a large dish and freeze for about 2 hours instead. The texture probably won’t be quite the same but it will still thicken because of the gelatin powder.
A small Sauce Pan (Only needed if you are making the swirl)
If you plan to make the yummy honey blackberry swirl then you’ll need a small sauce pan to mix the ingredients in.
